New Netflix movies: the biggest films to stream in January 2025

2025 is going to be another big year for new Netflix movies. The streaming titan isn’t hanging around when it comes to releasing new movies, either, as the first of those – Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl – has already arrived on the platform. Well, internationally, anyway – the Aardman animated movie made its debut on BBC One in the UK over the festive period.

But I digress. Over the next 12 months, I’ll be updating this Netflix article on a weekly basis with every new Netflix film that’s released, so consider this your one stop shop for all things Netflix movie-based in the weeks and months to come. And, hey, if you’re nonplussed about what’s discussed below, you can always read our best Netflix movies guide, which is packed with other great film recommendations on the world’s best streaming service. Here, then, are the three latest flicks to land on Netflix since December 13, 2024.

New Netflix movies: January 2025

Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

Release date: January 3 (available on BBC iPlayer in the UK)
Runtime: 80 minutes
Age rating: PG (US) / U (UK)
Cast: Ben Whitehead, Peter Kay, Lauren Patel, and Reece Shearsmith
Director: Nic Park and Merlin Crossingham
RT score: 100% (critics); 98% (audience)

Everyone’s favorite claymation pairing are back for another feature film-based adventure. That’s right, bumbling inventor Wallace and his loyal canine companion Gromit have returned for another misadventure – one that sees the animated British icons battling returning for Feathers McGraw when the latter reprograms Wallace’s latest creation in an attempt to steal the infamous Blue Diamond once more.

As a huge fan of Wallace and Gromit, I’ve been eagerly awaiting Vengeance Most Fowl‘s arrival – and it didn’t disappoint me when I watched it on BBC One in the UK on Christmas Day. It’s laugh out loud funny, quintessentially British in its makeup, wonderfully animated, and incredibly family friendly, especially with regards to its breezy 80-minute runtime. The first of many great new Netflix movies that’ll surely arrive this year.

New Netflix movies: December 2024

The Six Triple Eight

Release date: December 20
Runtime: 129 minutes
Age rating: TV-14 (US) / 12 (UK)
Cast: Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Susan Sarandon, with Dean Norris, and Sam Waterston, and Oprah Winfrey
Director: Tyler Perry
RT score: 55% (critics); 74% (audience)

This war drama, which stars Washington among many others, wasn’t well received by critics before the end of 2024. That’ll come as a disappointment to the streaming titan, with The Six Triple Eight not only being its final film of the year, but also its tentpole release of the 2024 festive season.

For those who may want to watch it, though, here’s its premise: “The Six Triple Eight is inspired by the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of colour to serve overseas in WWII. Despite facing racism and sexism – and gruelling working conditions – they were committed to serving their country with honour and distinction. Given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes delivered hope and shattered barriers.”

It’s a true story worth telling, and one that some viewers will certainly enjoy. The common consensus, though, is that it could’ve been far more gripping than it is. One to stick on if there’s nothing else to stream, but there are better options out there.

Carry-On

Release date: December 13
Runtime: 119 minutes
Age rating: TV-MA (US) / 15 (UK)
Cast: Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Logan Marshall-Green, Dean Norris, Sinqua Walls, and Jason Bateman
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
RT score: 88% (critics); 52% (audience)

Die Hard is a Christmas movie. There, I said it. What do you mean you don’t agree with me? Well, if you need further proof that it is, Collet-Serra’s new thriller flick provides it.

Okay, Carry-On has no ties to the aforementioned Bruce Willis-starring action franchise, but this Egerton and Bateman-led movie is clearly inspired by its festive season sibling. In it, Egerton plays Ethan, a young TSA agent who tries to outwit a mysterious traveler who’s hell-bent on ensuring a dangerous package makes its way onto a Christmas Eve flight. A terrifically breathless, suspense-filled Netflix Original, according to critics, but one that general audiences have been disappointed by.
