SPOILER WARNING: Today’s Wordle answer and hints are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to see them.
Wordle hints (game #1166) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has vowels in two places*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #1166) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is L.
L is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. Despite being the sixth most common letter overall, it’s only ranked 12th at the beginning of a word.
Wordle hints (game #1166) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #1166) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.
Wordle hints (game #1166) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1166) is… LITHE.
Sometimes Wordle is all a bit too simple. Not because the answer is necessarily super-easy, or because you play it with particular genius… it’s just a matter of luck. Today was one such game for me.
I solved it in three, but that only tells half of the story, with my opening word – picked at random – cutting the answers list to 26. My second guess then slashed that again, to just a single word – which I duly played and scored my three. The whole thing probably only took about two minutes, and most of that was spent deciding what to go for on the second guess.
LITHE is, admittedly, a relatively straightforward Wordle answer too – and we’ve had plenty of them lately. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.8, which makes it the seventh in a row below the 4.0 mark. You’d have to go back to January for the last time we had such a sustained easy run, although this is not yet in the same ballpark as that one, which lasted for a full two weeks. But a more difficult one would be welcome soon, all the same.
Regular readers will be aware that four of the five letters are very common (in the top 10 overall), with H the slight outlier (it ranks 14th). But perhaps surprisingly, only one of the most popular start words made major inroads today – SLATE, which left only six. STARE was at 24, though, which isn’t terrible, and my SLASH was only a little behind it.
With a yellow H at the end of the word, I had a dilemma. Usually, H goes at the end after an S, T or C, or in second place after those same three letters. It was already ruled out of position #5, of course, so it made sense for me to play it in position #2, maybe going for CHILD. But I really wanted a T in there, and ideally an E, as those two letters are so common in the game. I couldn’t find a way to do that with TH at the start, so instead went with HOTEL – and got lucky.
HOTEL would have been “one of my top picks in this situation”, said WordleBot, and cut the answer list from 26 to only one. That was LITHE and I played it next for my 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1165)
In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1165, too.
- Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was C.
C is a very common starting letter in Wordle – in fact, it’s the second most common of all, behind only S.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was N.
N is a pretty common ending letter in Wordle: it’s the seventh most likely in that position and features in 130 solutions.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1165)
- NYT average score: 3.6 (revised)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1165) was… CROWN.
It can be a depressing experience comparing my game to WordleBot’s every day. After all, it never needs to sleep or eat, so it never plays when it’s tired or hungry – two factors guaranteed to impact my own performance at the game! Plus, it can analyze thousands of words every millisecond and it also gets to use the very best start word of them all, CRANE.
That last factor was key to the way things played out between us today, because I scored a rather impressive 3/6, only to fire up the ‘bot and discover it had managed a 2/6. To describe it as frustrating doesn’t even come close…
Still, we were both well under the global average, which currently stands at 3.7 (note: revised to 3.6). That it’s even as high as that surprises me slightly, because CROWN is not on the face of it a particularly tough Wordle answer. I suppose the W is not hugely common, and there are a couple of similarly spelled words (BROWN, FROWN, GROWN, DROWN), but that’s about it.
There were certainly no complications for the WordleBot to navigate, because its start word, CRANE left only a pair of possible answers today: CROWN and CROON. No, it didn’t exactly have to use its digital brain very hard to solve this one.
In contrast, I had to whittle down 265 possible solutions following my opening word ICILY, so I reckon the moral victory was mine.
That said I didn’t have to use much brain power either: I played CRANE second rather than first, and that duly cut my options to the same two, CROWN and CROON.
There was an equal chance of either being the answer, but there was always the chance I’d somehow missed a third option, so it made sense for me to play the word that contained five letters rather than four with one repeated, so I went with CROWN. This proved to be a lucky answer, so I scored a creditable three.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
