Wordle hints (game #1216) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #1216) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is H.

H is not a particularly common starting letter in Wordle: only 69 games begin with it, and it ranks in 15th place.

Wordle hints (game #1216) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #1216) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle hints (game #1216) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1216) is… HALVE.

I’ve had lots of luck with Wordle lately, and judging by today’s game it’s not running out yet. I scored another 3/6 on a day when the average is currently at 4.3, and today even my opening word played a part.

That’s definitely not been the case every day recently, because I use a random start word – and inevitably that leads to situations such as yesterday’s, where I had 554 words remaining. Today, in contrast, I had only nine – which was better than any of WordleBot’s top 20.

My starter was ALLEY, which I was not delighted to have to play, given that yet again it contained a double letter; I seem to get about one or two of these a week, and it’s intensely frustrating, seeing as it only gives me four chances to uncover a letter rather than five.

That’s not strictly true, actually – because if there was a double letter included, it would give me the chance to uncover both. But the chances of that happening are slim.

Anyway, my word today was ALLEY, and it gave me yellow A and E plus green L in the middle. Nice. Others were not so lucky, with CRANE leaving 57 and STARE leaving 47, for instance. But those totals weren’t so high that they entirely explain the relatively high average of 4.3.

So what’s going on there? Well, for starters I suspect that the average will come down over time. This happened yesterday, with a score of 3.9 when I wrote the column being revised to 3.4 by the time I penned this one. Beyond that, I guess there’s the fact that it contains a V – which is the fifth least common letter in the game. And maybe that H at the start is a factor too; that’s 14th overall and 15th when starting an answer. Or it could be that people instead played CALVE or VALVE, or possibly FALSE or VALUE. That’s what happened to WordleBot, which could only score a four thanks to CRANE > TALUS > VALVE > HALVE.

My game, meanwhile, went ALLEY > SHAVE > HALVE. The second of those words was incredibly lucky, cutting my nine answers to only one, and giving me the always-welcome opportunity to lord it over the ‘bot.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1215)

In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1215, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was G.

G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It’s often paired with an L to make GL—, but I’m not revealing whether that’s the case today.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was T.

T is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – in fact only E and Y are more likely in that position.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1215) was… GRANT.

What a rollercoaster ride Wordle can be, eh? Tuesday’s game was the third hardest Wordle ever with an average score of 5.7; this one is… well, it’s a mundane, standard puzzle with an average of 3.9. That’s bang on the overall average for Wordle, so this is as far from noteworthy as you can get. (Note: it was revised all the way down to 3.4 by the end of the day, so much easier than it appeared when I wrote this yesterday)

There’s really not a lot to talk about here. The opening GR combination is the sixth most common in the game, appearing 38 times among Wordle’s 2,309 original solutions; the NT ending is the 13th most likely, and occurs 37 times; the A in the middle is the most common letter to appear there. It’s all rather expected.

The only complicating factor is that there are a few alternative words that differ by only one letter, and that fact probably lifts it from being a super-easy game into the standard realms. Change the R, for instance, and it could be GIANT; change the A and it could be GRUNT; change the N and it could be GRAFT; change the T and it could be GRAND. And of course with two letters different there are many more options.

I solved it in three, the same as WordleBot, thanks to some fantastic luck on both the second and third guesses. My game didn’t start well, though, with my random opener PLIED leaving 554 possible solutions. In contrast, CRANE, WordleBot’s choice, left only seven – while the always-popular TRAIN whittled the numbers down to one.

I followed up with COAST, which isn’t generally among my second-word choices but what can I say… I fancied a change. And it worked, giving me green A and T, and cutting my options to a quartet.

These were easy to find, because there were no longer many letters that could go between my two greens: N, which could give me GRANT or QUANT, R – which was for QUART – and F as in GRAFT.

The good news was that playing any of GRANT, GRAFT or QUANT was guaranteed to give me the answer on the fourth guess even if it wasn’t correct, so there was no need for me to narrow them down further. I was able to choose my favorite one of the four – or at least the one I thought was most likely – and went with GRANT. This proved a very fortunate choice, and it gave me my 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
