Wordle hints (game #1289) – clue #1 – Vowels

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1289) is… MAMBO.

What is it about Wordles with multiple Ms? As my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, there are only 15 of these among the 2,309 original solutions, and so far we’ve had 10, including today’s.

I don’t have an average score for the first three – MIMIC (game #48), MAXIM (#50) and GAMMA (#93) – but I do for the remainder. These are COMMA (#291, average score 4.5), MADAM (#387, 4.3), MUMMY (#491, 5.8), MAGMA (#791, 4.9), GUMMY (#1,076, 4.6), MOMMY (#1,208, 5.0) and now MAMBO, which currently has an average of 4.7. Together, they have an average of 4.82 – which must make the repeated-M pattern one of the toughest in the game overall.

MAMBO is particularly difficult due to the O at the end – a relatively unusual format in its own right – and the B just before it. B is very common at the start of a word, but a lot less so elsewhere, to the extent that it only occurs in position #4 a total of 24 times. BO as an ending combination, meanwhile, only turns up five times altogether; this is the first of them.

There was no salvation to be found among the best Wordle start words today, either, with only a handful of WordleBot’s top 20 dipping below 100, and most way above that. My randomly chosen SKULL was in a different class entirely, though; that left 1,274 possible answers!

I played the odds with my second guess, going for TRACE based on commonality of letters, but though WordleBot loved it, it was unlucky; I had only a single yellow A still, and a rather long shortlist of 65 words.

Not that I actually had that many jotted down, of course; that’s merely what WordleBot told me afterwards. But I had a hunch that the A would go in the second slot, and packed the rest of the word with what common letters remained to make BANDY.

Finally my luck turned, as BANDY gave me a yellow B and green A. This now reduced my word pool to only two: MAMBO and MAMBA. I didn’t think the latter would be an answer (although who knows…) so went with the former and walked away relatively unscathed with a 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1288)

In a different time zone where it’s still Saturday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1288, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was D.

D is the ninth most common starting letter in the game, so maybe slightly less likely than you might expect.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was Y.

Y is the second most common ending letter in the game, behind only E. In total, 364 Wordle answers end with a Y.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1288) was… DECRY.

A good first guess is always helpful in Wordle, but an unlucky (or poor) opener needn’t be a disaster. That’s because things can change very quickly in this game, and you need only look at my board above today for proof of that.

DECRY is a relatively tough Wordle, with an average score of 4.1. Its difficulty probably stems from its relative obscurity as a word; it’s a little archaic, not the kind of thing you get people saying on TikTok or whatever. But letter-wise, there’s really nothing to fear here. And indeed, if your start word contained C, R and E – which many do – you’ll have had a very good first guess.

CRANE, for instance, left only 14 answers, as did CRATE. CARET was better still, at 11. Even STARE – which doesn’t have a C – left only 13.

However, my opener was AMUSE, which doesn’t contain a C or R, and which was therefore rather less helpful; it left 463 possible answers. With a yellow E at the end of the word, and with R not yet played, I did what I long ago learned to do at the earliest opportunity and submitted an ER word next. If I’d have been right, it would have given me the best chance of narrowing down the options quickly. If wrong… well, I’d have been playing common letters in obvious positions anyway, and sometimes that’s all you can do.

I went with TILER, in order to include three other likely letters, and though it didn’t reveal an ER answer, it did give me plenty of information. I now knew, for instance, that there was indeed an R, but that it wasn’t at the end. And I knew that the E couldn’t be in either of the final two spots.

WordleBot told me that I now had 18 possible answers left, but I didn’t know that at the time and didn’t find anywhere near that many. I did, however, come up with several that ended in RY – including FERRY, BERRY, EVERY and, yes, DECRY. I didn’t find many more, but in fairness several of those on the ‘bot’s list seem unlikely to be solutions. For instance, DRECK – really? Or RECON, which I’m not sure counts as a proper word. That said, SNAFU was an answer once, so who knows…

Anyway, I decided to play DECRY because all five letters were common and I figured it would tell me if this was a Y-ending word or not. And lo and behold, it was the actual answer. That’s one of the luckiest third guesses I’ve had in some time, nicely offsetting some of the misfortune I had on that opening guess.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
