Welcome to your help to solve Wordle puzzle #256 – and it’s already proving a little tricky for some people, thanks to a pesky letter catching loads of us out.
We know you’re here to, essentially, cheat – the thought of seeing that streak go up in smoke is too much to bear, right?
Well, before you do that, check out our hints and tools that can help you solve it on your own terms – and we’ve also got word-wrangling pro Lance Ulanoff’s Daily Wordle Diary to give you further clues on how you can start getting better at Wordle too.
(And if you do want the Wordle answer for today’s (Mar 2) puzzle, then you can just scroll straight down. No judgement, it’s a tough one today).
Today’s Wordle hint from TechRadar
If you want the good news, today’s puzzle isn’t one that’s going to flummox too many of you, as it’s a pretty common word. However, there’s one element that appears to be catching out some people already, so here are our three daily hints:
- There is only one vowel
- It contains a popular two-letter combo
- It ends in a Y
Today, we managed it in three attempts, but that’s largely because we wanted to flex and start with an unlikely word in the hope it would be randomly right – HEAVY was stupid in hindsight (V and H? Come on!) but it gave us that super-useful Y.

Other ways to find Wordle’s 5 letter words
Instead of scrolling to the Wordle answer section below, why not try a 5 letter word generator? There are loads of great tools online that can help you learn a bit more about the world of Wordle and how to get the right letters first – how about you check one of those out?
One of our favorites is WordFinderX, which allows you to put in letters at the start and the end if you know them and, crucially: allows you to enter any letters that don’t fit.
Started to take advantage of the Words with Friends craze, this website has blatantly had a huge rise in traffic of late, but it really does do the job.
You can also try WordTips, which does the same thing but with a slightly kinder UI. We also like The Free Dictionary, but that only lets you use ‘contains’, ‘ends with’ or ‘starts with’ – as well as ‘unscramble’.
And finally – check out this useful grid that shows the hottest letter pairings – it can really help focus your mind on what might go where.
Right, now you can have the Wordle answer for today…
Today’s Wordle Answer #254 (Feb 28)
OK, here you go: today’s Wordle answer for puzzle #256. Are you sure you want it? Does the streak mean that much to you?
Fine – today’s Wordle solution is NASTY. A relatively popular word (according to Merriam-Webster it’s in the top 1% of words used) there’s a good chance a lot of people will have got this one – but if you’re not one of them, don’t worry – that Y is tricksy.
What’s the definition of NASTY? Well, as an adjective it essentially means something repugnant – whether that’s a taste, the condition of something, an action or more.
Dave had a nasty taste in his mouth.
Dave was a nasty piece of work.
Dave’s house was in a nasty condition.
Dave was a nasty man with a disgusting habit of leaving out old gobstoppers.
It can also be used as a verb in more modern language, as a thing to be avoided or disgusted by:
Dave’s woke up to find his swimming pool was covered in bugs and other nasties.
How did you do yesterday?
RIght – you’re clearly good at Wordle, and while today was a popular word, it wasn’t one of the more simple ones.
Let’s look back at answer #254 to make you feel better about yourself – how many attempts did it take you to get CHOKE?
Only 1% of people failed, but most got it on four attempts – if you beat that, you’re a legend. Go feel good about your day.

Great Wordle alternatives
What about if you fancy a little bit of something else? Check back daily to see our growing list of alternatives you should try.
Wordle Unlimited
Love a bit of Wordle but annoyed it only lasts one day? Well, why don’t you try Wordle Unlimited, the hugely unofficial game where you can play as many times as you like – and we’ve got all you need to know on how to use and play Wordle Unlimted ready for you.
Nerdle
Such a different game to Wordle, but it gives your brain a different workout. Consider Wordle your long, steady state run and then Nerdle being the HIIT workout you (inexplicably) do next.
You’re asked to enter a sum of 8 numbers or symbols long… and apart from knowing it has to have some numbers and an equals in there, that’s all you get.
It’s a great play – plus there’s an ‘Instant Nerdle’ that shows you one line of semi-correct entries in the wrong place… and it’s up to you to get it. Lovely.
