OK, we’d call today’s puzzle ‘mildly tricky’. There are some unusual letter combinations and placements, and letters out of their usual slot – so that’s going to lead some people down some dead ends (like us).

Although, according to Google trends – today’s solution is a rather tricky one, causing all kinds of issues compared to RUPEE, the only other ‘hard’ one this week.

Here’s are our hints:

  1. It starts with a vowel
  2. There’s an E, but it does not go at the end
  3. There’s a double letter, and they’re not together in the word.

Other ways to find Wordle’s 5 letter words

Instead of scrolling to the Wordle answer section below, why not try a 5 letter word generator? There are loads of great tools online that can help you learn a bit more about the world of Wordle and how to get the right letters first – how about you check one of those out?

One of our favorites is WordFinderX, which allows you to put in letters at the start and the end if you know them and, crucially: allows you to enter any letters that don’t fit.

Started to take advantage of the Words with Friends craze, this website has blatantly had a huge rise in traffic of late, but it really does do the job.

You can also try WordTips, which does the same thing but with a slightly kinder UI. We also like The Free Dictionary, but that only lets you use ‘contains’, ‘ends with’ or ‘starts with’ – as well as ‘unscramble’.

And finally – check out this useful grid that shows the hottest letter pairings – it can really help focus your mind on what might go where, and helps us know if the puzzle is tricky or not.

Right, now you can have the Wordle answer for today…

Right – so here’s today’s Wordle answer for #258: it’s AHEAD.

That’s right, the word that comes from the Old English from ‘a’ meaning ‘in’ or ‘at’, and head, which is… well, head.

The definition of AHEAD is simple: it means something that’s in front of one, either in a line or on a journey.

Dave looked ahead but all he could see was squirrels lining his path

It can also mean that something is in advance of where it’s expected to be.

Dave took out his gobstopper. His sucking had caused its shrinking to be ahead of where he expected. Dave was sad.

Unlike yesterday, where MOURN was well popular in the1800s, AHEAD is a much more modern word – so it’s likely people will kick themselves when they get it.

How did you do?

Well done for being great at Wordle – it’s only an anomaly that you didn’t get it today straight away.

But how did you do with answer #256? Well, that was the fun NASTY, which got more people than we might have expected. 2% failure rate, Wordle champ status if you did it in 3 attempts or less.

Love a bit of Wordle but annoyed it only lasts one day? Well, why don’t you try Wordle Unlimited, the hugely unofficial game where you can play as many times as you like – and we’ve got all you need to know on how to use and play Wordle Unlimted ready for you.

Nerdle

Such a different game to Wordle, but it gives your brain a different workout. Consider Wordle your long, steady state run and then Nerdle being the HIIT workout you (inexplicably) do next.

You’re asked to enter a sum of 8 numbers or symbols long… and apart from knowing it has to have some numbers and an equals in there, that’s all you get.

It’s a great play – plus there’s an ‘Instant Nerdle’ that shows you one line of semi-correct entries in the wrong place… and it’s up to you to get it. Lovely.
