Oh boy! Today’s Wordle is one of those puzzles. You know, the streak-ending games that people remember for months afterwards. It’s harder than HOUND, harder than BORAX… probably the hardest since RIPER back in February.

J is the least common letter overall in Wordle, but is only the fourth least likely starting letter. That’s because it begins 20 out of the 27 answers it appears in (Y, Z and X are all less common starting letters).

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #675)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #675) is… JOKER.
Right then, there’s a lot to unpick here. WordleBot, the NYT’s ever-helpful, ever-patronizing AI tool, says people are solving today’s puzzle in 5.4 guesses. That makes it the equal hardest word we’ve had since last February, when RIPER (game #613) was the answer. And we all remember how tough that one was. Suddenly the likes of HOUND and even BORAX don’t seem quite so difficult, eh?
The problem is our old friend the ER answer, coupled here with a couple of uncommon letters in J and K. The former is the least common letter in the entire game, while K ranks a little way ahead of it in 20th. There’s really no shame if you struggled to locate those two today.
You won’t have had any help from the best Wordle starting words, either. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 329 possible solutions. My pick, STARE, left 181. The most popular choice, ADIEU, left 155. CRANE (187), SLANT (530), TRACE (171), CARTE (163), CRATE (171)… none of them were any real use here.
Your second guess will therefore have had to work really hard. If, like me, you were fairly sure it was an ER answer then you’ll have had an advantage: I played LINED, which enabled me to confirm the E in its position, while leaving out the R so I could test another letter. WordleBot said it was a “terrific choice” and awarded me 97/99 for skill; but a luck score of just 12 told the real story here, and I still had 38 possible answers left.
With A and I ruled out, I was reasonably sure this would be an -O-ER answer. -U-ER is a lot less common and there also aren’t that many -E-ER words. But I couldn’t be sure, so I decided to play FORUM to confirm it either way; if neither the O nor U changed color, I’d know it was almost certainly an -E-ER answer, such as FEWER or FEVER.
Playing the R in the middle was also a deliberate choice, to eliminate words such as BORER, CORER and PURER. None of them should have been acceptable as a Wordle answer, but then we could say the same about PARER and RIPER…
FORUM confirmed my fears: this was an -O-ER answer, which meant I was going to have to rule out a lot of consonants before finding the right ones.
WordleBot said there were now 13 possible solutions, and I already had a list of possibles, made for previous ER games: BOXER, COVER, COWER, HOVER, JOKER, ROGER, ROVER and ROWER. There were also a few others that fit, but that didn’t seem likely to be answers: COOER, COPER, COYER, HOPER, VOWER, ROPER and BOWER; the latter two were possibles, WordleBot said.
The ‘bot also included a few other I had ruled out as past Wordle answers: POKER, POWER and WOOER.
That might not look like too many answers, but the problem was that between them they used 11 distinct consonants – B, C, G, H, J, K, P, V, W, X and Y – while four also had a second R in there. Danger lay ahead if I didn’t play sensibly: if I guessed COVER, for instance, and neither the C or V changed color, I’d still have had seven options left and just two guesses remaining.
I needed another guess just to narrow things down, then, and WHACK finally did the job. The K turned yellow and in the process left me with just one possible solution, JOKER. WordleBot thought it was two, but I knew POKER had been a previous answer, so played JOKER fairly confidently for my 5/6.
Amazingly, WordleBot only scored a 6/6 itself – but it won’t be the only one to do that today. Phew!

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #674)

- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was O.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #674)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #674) was… DITTO.
This feels like quite a difficult answer to judge the difficulty of. WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 3.9 guesses, and I got it in 3/6, but I had to think about it for ages.
The letters are themselves all very common: I, T and O are all in the top 10, with D in 13th. But there are a few complications to the way in which they’re used. D is not the most obvious starting letter; of the original 2,309 Wordle solutions, 111 begin with a D, so you’d expect one in less than 5% of games. O is even more unlikely at the end of an answer, where it occurs a mere 58 times.
And of course there’s a double T in it. T is the fifth most likely letter to be repeated, but two Ts together still only occurs in 21 Wordle solutions. By that measure, you’d only expect to see it around every 100 games. We were well overdue one, with PATTY (game #416) the last time this pattern turned up.
None of the best Wordle starting words were really helpful today, although some fared better than others. At the good end of the spectrum, ADIEU left just 34 possible answers, with SLATE (45), CARTE (53) and CRATE (also 53) not far behind it. But my choice of STARE left 119 answers, while CRANE was very unlucky, at 537.
I always play the same word after a single yellow T – namely, POINT. WordleBot agreed with my choice, awarding me 99/99 for skill and saying it would have played the same thing.
It also awarded me 90 for luck, because somehow it narrowed down my options from 119 to just 1! Not that I realized that for a while. POINT gave me a yellow O and yellow I to join my still-yellow T. But try as I might, I could not find a word that fit.
On multiple occasions I thought I’d solved it, then realized the word I’d come up with no longer fit: TOXIC, TONIC, TOPIC, IDIOT, DIVOT… again and again it kept happening. The only word that worked was LITHO, which seemed very unlikely to be the actual answer. I kept that in my back pocket and continued looking for a while longer, before finally stumbling across DITTO.
By this stage, I was ready to play anything, so typed in those five letters and breathed a sigh of relief when all five turned green. And no, not because I was worried I’d fail – but rather, because I’d been trying to find the solution for about 40 minutes now and needed to sleep!

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
