Today’s Wordle answer (game #703)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #703) is… CLERK.
It’s now a full two weeks since we’ve had a truly difficult Wordle (COCOA on May 9) and today’s game does nothing to change that trend. CLERK is being solved in an average of 3.6 guesses, according to WordleBot, and there’s not a lot here to worry most players.
The K at the end is the least common letter – but it is quite common in that position in a word, where it ranks ninth. The other four letters are all very common, with C the second most common starting letter, L and R two of the three most common consonants (along with T) and E the most common letter overall in Wordle.
Plenty of the best Wordle starting words will therefore have been very helpful today, as many of them use two or three of those letters. For instance, SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left just 20 possible solutions, CRANE left 12 and my pick (STARE) left 14.
Many of those 14 words ended in a Y, and I came up with a list of eight of them: EVERY, FIERY, QUERY, EMERY, FERRY, MERRY, LEERY and BERRY. I also had WEIRD and, yes, CLERK. Playing a Y-ending word made sense, so I went with DERBY; this couldn’t have been the answer, but I wanted to include an R in the middle of the word to see whether this was an RRY answer.
It wasn’t, but DERBY ruled out so many options that I now had just one left. That word was CLERK, and I played it next for a sweet 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #702)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #702)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #702) was… IGLOO.
This was a tough one. Or at any rate, I found it tough. Possibly both, but definitely the latter – I only escaped with a 5/6 and at one stage worried for my streak.
In fairness, most people will probably find this quite difficult, and WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.1, making it the second toughest we’ve had in the past 11 games. Then again, 4.1 isn’t 5, so I definitely underperformed.
Luck played a role in that, for sure. None of the best Wordle starting words were very helpful today, but STARE, my choice, was particularly unfortunate: it provided no clues at all and still left me with 318 possible solutions. Very few openers were below 100 remaining answers, with the likes of SLATE (106), CRANE (357) and ADIEU (154) all pretty high.
That’s no surprise, looking at the letters. An I at the start? That’s super-rare. An O at the end? Not much more common. Two Os? In general, not that uncommon – but at the end… well, IGLOO is one of only two Wordle answers with that format.
My go-to second guess after a failure with STARE is either CLOUD or COULD. I went with CLOUD before, but in hindsight COULD would have been better, as it would have given me a green O rather than a yellow one.
I was immediately distracted by the thought that I might be in an -OLLY trap, with FOLLY, LOLLY, HOLLY, GOLLY, MOLLY and JOLLY all among the possible answers I jotted down. I had a couple of other Y-ending words, too, including LOBBY and LOWLY.
In order to establish that pattern I played JOWLY next, but while I was on the right track I should have played FOLLY, WordleBot said. Certainly JOWLY wasn’t much use beyond confirming that this wasn’t a Y-ending answer after all.
So I looked again – and found LIMBO. This was one of only three possible solutions now left to me, according to WordleBot, but was the only one I found. The others were the eventual answer, IGLOO, and LINGO. I played LIMBO with a certain confidence and was a little worried when it wasn’t right. Fortunately I did now only have one answer left, and eventually realized it was IGLOO.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
