Wordle hints (game #747) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #747) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is W.
W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.
Wordle hints (game #747) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #747) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is Y.
Y is the second most common ending letter in the game, behind only E. In total, 364 Wordle answers end with a Y.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #747)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #747) is… WINDY.
As with yesterday’s VENOM, this is a fairly standard Wordle. You’ll struggle to get a really high score, but it shouldn’t be a streak killer, either.
Part of the problem is that none of the best Wordle starting words were very helpful today. The likes of SLATE (309) and TRACE (345) left many, many possible solutions, as did my preferred STARE (319). However, those of you who start with ADIEU had a decent opening today – that left just 34 options.
My starter word drew a blank, so I went with my trusty CLOUD for the second guess. But that wasn’t a roaring success either – all it gave me was a yellow D. That was a bit worrying for this stage of the game, although unknown to me at the time I had now reduced my options to just nine.
I didn’t find all of those, because as soon as I realized DYING was an option I played that; I had a hunch the word might end in a Y, and I wanted to include the final vowel, I, plus an N (because it’s very common).
DYING wasn’t right, but WordleBot said it was an excellent guess and told me that it left me with just one possible answer. It took me a little while to work out what that was, but once I spotted WINDY I was fairly confident it would be the solution, and it duly gave me another 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #746)
In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #746, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was V.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was M.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer is a toxic substance.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #746)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #746) was… VENOM.
VENOM is a nice word and a nice Wordle. Well, not a nice word as such, given that it describes something harmful to many living creatures, but a satisfying word to say. Go on, try it. VENOM. VEN-OM. Maybe it’s just me.
It’s not just me who may have found it a hard Wordle to solve, though. VENOM has an average Wordle score of 4.1, according to WordleBot, making it a good deal tougher than yesterday’s IRATE or Sunday’s HOTEL. And if you want to know why, well that’s as simple as looking at the first letter. V is not a common letter in general, and though it’s slightly more likely to be found at the start of a word than it is in some other positions, it’s not the kind of letter you play on a whim.
It doesn’t feature in any of the best Wordle starting words either, which is probably why none were very helpful today. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 329 possible solutions and the likes of TRACE (265), SLANT (163) and my STARE (249) were not much better.
Nor did my second guess do quite as much good as some have in previous games. BLEND gave me a yellow N, but the E refused to go green and the upshot was that I still had 17 options left.
Several of these started with W (WOMEN, WOVEN, WOKEN), so I decided to play WENCH next – which WordleBot didn’t like. In fact, it only awarded me a measly 62/99 for skill and said it “wasn’t my favorite”. Well, given that WENCH reduced my options to just two – VENOM and XENON – I’m not entirely sure why it was so negative.
I didn’t even consider XENON as an option, so played VENOM for my 4/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
