Wordle hints (game #762) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #762) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is B.
B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.
Wordle hints (game #762) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #762) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is Y.
Y is the second most common ending letter in the game, behind only E. In total, 364 Wordle answers end with a Y.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #762)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #762) is… BURLY.
Another day, another fairly difficult Wordle. BURLY has an average score of 4.2, according to WordleBot, and it caused me a few problems on my way to a 4/6.
Part of the problem is that none of the best Wordle starting words helped at all. SLATE (106), TRACE (77), STARE (123), CRANE (103), ADIEU (246)… they all left a lot of options.
In my case, I had 123 of them. Fortunately my second guess, CRONY, narrowed them down nicely to just six. Not that I found them all – I wrote down RUDDY then, for some stupid reason, decided that must be the solution and stopped looking for other options. Slapdash, yes, but as it happens it worked well enough, giving me a green U and reducing those choices to just two. Then again, if I’d have played RUGBY, or GIRLY, or MURKY, I’d have had just one solution left. And of course if I’d looked hard enough I might have even found BURLY and solved it in 3/6.
I then repeated my mistake on the fourth guess, finding BURLY early on and playing that rather than looking to see if there were other possibles. It was the answer, of course, but that was purely luck – it could just as easily have been MURKY, the other option that was open to me.
Still, lucky or not I’ll take that 4/6 – especially as WordleBot only scored a 5/6 itself.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #761)
In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #761, too.
- Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was F.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was K.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer is on the side.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #761)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #761) was… FLANK.
If yesterday’s TONIC was a respite from a tricky type of Wordle word for Tuesday’s FLYER, then today sees a return to the difficult side of the game. Like FLYER, FLANK has an average Wordle score of 4.3, making it well above the norm for the game. And like FLYER, it presents a particular type of challenge.
In this case, that’s the too-many-answers conundrum, because FLANK shares its format with multiple other possible answers. The LAN bit in the middle is the key: that also crops up in the likes of BLANK, PLANK, CLANK, BLAND, CLANG, PLANT, SLANT and SLANG. If you didn’t get all of those letters early on you might also have been considering words such as as FLACK and FLASK, or FLING, FLUNG and FLUNK.
For that reason, SLANT was obviously one of the best Wordle starting words to play today; it left just eight possible solutions. SLATE (21) and CRANE (20) were also pretty good. My choice – STARE – was less helpful, as I still had 43 answers to whittle down.
With a single green A in the middle I might have been tempted to play a word such as BLAND next, purely because it has a lot of common consonants either side of the vowel. According to WordleBot, 5% of players did go with that as their second guess. But PLANK (10%) and CLOUD (9%) were more common still. WordleBot suggested CLUNK was the best choice, but I went with the similar CLING.
This gave the green L and N either side of my A and narrowed down my choices to just four: PLANK, FLANK, BLANK and BLAND. I figured BLANK was the sensible next guess, as it would point the way to BLAND if the B turned green but the K didn’t, and would eliminate one of the three other choices if the B went gray and the K turned green.
WordleBot agreed: it would have played BLANK next too. But it was wrong. I now had a 50/50, but for once guessed correctly, playing FLANK for my 4/6. It was only after the game that I realized PLANK had been a past Wordle answer anyway (in May this year, game #697; maybe I subconsciously recalled it and that’s why I didn’t choose it again today. Either way, I got lucky.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
