Wordle hints (game #772) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #772) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is S.
S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.
Wordle hints (game #772) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #772) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.
Wordle hints (game #772) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #772)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #772) is… STYLE.
I think this might now officially be the easiest Wordle run we’ve ever had. Today’s answer has an average score of just 3.4, according to WordleBot, meaning we’ve now had seven games in a row below 4.0. I don’t have records for all 773 games (the first one was #0), but it’s certainly the only time that’s happened in the 350-odd that I have notes for.
Not only does STYLE continue an easy run, but it is itself one of the simpler puzzles even in that company. S is the most common starting letter in the game, and E the most common ending. T and L are both common in all positions. Y is the outlier – it only regularly appears at the end of an answer, and you might well have had to work through the vowels before you realized it was taking the middle spot.
Some of today’s low score can also be explained by the way in which the best Wordle starting words helped. WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, left just two possible solutions today. SLANT left six and my STARE left five. That’s definitely going to bring the average down further.
So, I had five to narrow down: STOLE, STYLE, STONE, STOVE and STOKE. I missed the latter, though, so only thought I had four to choose from. Now, I could have played a non-answer word next, one designed to guarantee a 3/6 rather than to solve it; WordleBot suggested NOVEL. But I figured the worst I’d score would be a 4/6 anyway, so instead I went with STOLE.
If the answer had been STONE, STOVE or STOKE, I’d actually have still faced a 1/3 chance for my third guess, and might have ended up with a 5/6; the fact that I’d missed STOKE as a possible could have hurt me there. But instead, I had a bit of luck. When the L turned green but the O stayed gray I knew it had to be STYLE, and instead scored a 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #771)
In a different time zone where it’s still Sunday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #771, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was B.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer is something you do in water.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #771)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #771) was… BATHE.
It’s a funny thing, luck. If you don’t get enough of it in Wordle, you can quite easily do everything right but still end up with a below-par score. But get too much of it and it just looks like you’re cheating.
Today I scored a 2/6 – my third in the past five games. Yes, we’re in the midst of a particularly easy run right now, but even so, three 2s (and two 3s) looks suspicious. I didn’t cheat, of course – because there would really be no point in me writing this column each day if I didn’t test myself fully. It’s honestly just a case of luck being with me over the past few games. But there’s really no reason for you to believe me about that!
Assuming you do believe me, we can discuss why my good score today is not only a case of good luck. For starters, it is another easy one. WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of just 3.6, to go with 3.9, 3.7, 3.9, 3.2 and 3.9 in the previous five days. And letter-wise, that makes some sense: B is the third most common starting letter in the game (after S and C), A is the most likely to occur in position #2 and E is the most common ending. T and H are less common in their respective positions, but the T is very common overall, and the H often crops up when the T does. There are no repeated letters, either, so no complications to it at all.
Plus, some of the best Wordle starting words were tremendously helpful today. I’m not going to say they were lucky, because luck is less of a factor with your first guess than probability. Is that a type of luck? Well, maybe. But there’s mathematical reasoning behind it. If you played SLATE, for instance, you had just three words to choose from; CARTE was at five, CRATE at six and TRACE at 12.
My personal favorite, STARE, left nine possible answers, so I got off to a very good start through a combination of good sense and, yes, a little luck. But my second guess was mainly about the latter of those two.
I couldn’t find nine possibles myself; my list had five on it, LATHE, BATHE, MATTE, ACUTE and HAUTE. I dismissed LATTE, because I remembered that being a past Wordle answer (game #696 in May this year). I didn’t find LATKE or TAUPE, which is probably fair enough. And somehow I missed TABLE, probably the most obvious word in that list.
As it happens, I think I would have played BATHE anyway, purely because it would also have pointed the way to LATHE if it was wrong. In fact, it would have guaranteed a 3/6 unless the answer was either MATTE or LATKE (and I’m really not sure the latter is likely to ever be a Wordle answer anyway).
Anyway, I went with BATHE expecting to score a 3/6 and ended up with another 2/6. That’s luck for you. I fully expect to come crashing back down to earth tomorrow, though.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
