Wordle today is a pretty standard one, by which I mean it’s not super-hard or super-easy. In fact, WordleBot says this one is taking an average of 4 guesses to solve, putting it right in the middle of the difficulty range.
That said, some of the best Wordle start words will have given you an advantage today, helping you turn an average 4/6 into a good 3/6 or an amazing 2/6 – so make sure you choose wisely.
I’m a Wordle addict who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Wordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my hints and clues to Wordle #591.
SPOILER WARNING: Information about Wordle today and Wordle yesterday are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to know the answers.
Wordle today (game #591) – hint #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has one vowel*. (Need another hint? Next I’ll tell you what the first letter is.)
There’s just the one vowel in today’s Wordle answer, which happens more often than you might think. Wordle has an average of 1.75 vowels per game among its 2,309 answers, so you’d expect two vowels slightly more often, though.
The last game to have one vowel in it was #589 on Sunday: FISHY.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle today (game #591) – hint #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is C. (Want a third hint? I’ll also tell you if there are any repeated letters.)
This is a repeat of yesterday’s game, when the first letter was also C (for CRAVE). C is the second most common starting letter in the game, after S, and leads 198 of Wordle’s 2,309 solutions.
Wordle today (game #591) – hint #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle. (I’ve got one more hint if you need one below.)
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one.
Wordle today (game #591) – hint #4 – final clue

Wordle today (game #591) – the answer
The answer to today’s Wordle, game #591, is… CROSS.
This is about as average as Wordle can get. WordleBot says people are solving it in 4 guesses and it’s a nice mix of common letters with a duplicate thrown in for good measure to make it slightly harder. I doubt there’ll be many 2/6s today, but there shouldn’t be too many lost streaks either.
The double-S is the biggest complication here, because S isn’t that likely to be repeated in an answer, despite being very common overall. The main reason for that is that it most commonly occurs at the start of a word, where it’s regularly paired with T, H, L, N or P.
However, there are 49 answers in which S appears more than once, and in 36 of those you get two Ss together. They’re very common at the end of an answer: think AMISS, BLESS, CHESS, CLASS etc.
The good news is that you don’t get many Wordle answers that end with a single S, because the game doesn’t include plurals – so if you did find that S in the fifth slot early on, you’ll have had a good hint as to what the solution was today.
The other notable thing about game #591 is that it starts with the same two letters as game #590 yesterday. The last time that happened was in September 2022, when games #467 and #468 were SCALD and SCORN respectively. Yes, I am a proper Wordle geek.
My own game started off well for that reason, because my current choice of Wordle start word is CRATE. That gave me the CR bit right away, but whereas yesterday I only had 3 more answers to choose from, today I had 14. Quite a few other start words gave similar results, but CRONE was probably the best choice among the common options – that left just 6 choices.
I didn’t find all 14 of my possible solutions, but I came up with most of them and decided that rather than guess immediately and try to score a 2/6, I’d instead narrow down the options to guarantee a 3/6.
My choice of word was KILOS – which WordleBot said was “a solid guess, and a lucky one.” Thanks for the faint praise, WordleBot!
Lucky or not, it ruled out the likes of CRISP, CRIMP, CRUSH, CRUMB, CRONY, CROON, CROOK, CRICK and CROCK and left me with just one possible answer: CROSS. So that’s a fourth 3/6 in a row for me as my streak approaches the 400 mark.
Wordle yesterday (game #590) – hints
In a different time zone where it’s still Monday? Don’t worry – I can give you some hints for Wordle #590 too.
- Wordle yesterday had two vowels*
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was C.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- You’ll really, really want yesterday’s Wordle answer.
Wordle yesterday (game #590) – the answer
The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #590, was… CRAVE.
This Wordle will most likely be a little polarizing, depending on your choice of start word. WordleBot‘s own favorite is CRANE, and playing that here would have left you with just 3 possible solutions. It was the same story with my own current favorite, CRATE, and also with CARTE and TRACE.
According to WordleBot, 2% of all players start with CRANE, so many people will have seen four letters turn green right away yesterday. After that it will have just been a case of choosing between CRAVE, CRAZE and CRATE.
In my case, I started with CRATE – so I had to choose between CRAVE, CRAZE and CRANE. I couldn’t recall any having been a previous answer, but I’ve had a look since playing and it turns out CRAZE was the answer in December 2021, around the time I started playing Wordle.
As it happened knowing that wouldn’t have made a difference, as I decided CRANE was the most likely anyway. When that wasn’t right I tried CRAVE and scored my 3/6; that’s my third in a row.
For those of you who didn’t start with CRANE, CRATE or something similar… well, you may well have had a harder game here. For starters, you may well have struggled to narrow down your options, given that the -RA-E pattern is a very common one. And even when you did establish that it started with a C, you’ll have to have contended with the fact that the V is quite uncommon – it ranks 21st among all letters in the game.
All of that adds up to an average score of 4.2 for the game, despite the fact that many lucky people will have got 2/6s or 3/6s. I suspect a few streaks may have been lost here – fingers crossed that yours wasn’t among them.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
