Wordle today – hints, clues and answer for game #592, Wednesday, February 1

Wordle today is arguably the easiest one we’ve had for a while, with WordleBot stating that it’s taking just 3.6 guesses to solve on average.

Choose one of the best Wordle starting words, meanwhile, and you’ll have had a great chance of a 3/6 or even better.

I’m a Wordle addict who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Wordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my hints and clues to Wordle #592.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about Wordle today and Wordle yesterday are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to know the answers.

Wordle today (game #592) – hint #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has one vowel*. (Need another hint? Next I’ll tell you what the first letter is.)

There’s just the one vowel in today’s Wordle answer, which happens more often than you might think. Wordle has an average of 1.75 vowels per game among its 2,309 answers, so you’d expect two vowels slightly more often, though.

The last game to have one vowel in it was yesterday’s CROSS.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle today (game #592) – hint #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

S is the most common starting letter in the game, with a massive 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 solutions beginning with it.

It’s one of the reasons why many people’s choice of best Wordle starting word begin with an S.

Wordle today (game #592) – hint #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle. (I’ve got one more hint if you need one below.)

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one, so this is no major surprise.

Wordle today (game #592) – hint #4 – final clue

The answer to today’s Wordle, game #592, is… SCOLD.

The past couple of games have been around or above 4, so this is a nice easy one with a 3.6 average according to WordleBot

There are really no obvious complications to it. As a word it’s a relatively common one – but note that SCOLD, meaning to angrily rebuke someone, is different from SCALD (meaning a burn caused by dry heat. That was the answer to game #467, as it happens).

All of the letters are common ones, too. S is the most common starting letter in the entire game, and C, O and L all feature in the top 10 letters overall. D is just outside that, at 13th, but it’s the 8th most likely letter to end a Wordle answer.

I started with CRANE today, rather than CRATE as I’d been doing, but I’ll probably switch back again as I really like including a T in my starting word. Anyhow, it made little difference today, as neither features in SCOLD.

WordleBot said I had 69 words left, which is quite a lot – and which almost certainly ruled out a 2/6 for me today. Better options included SLATE (20 answers remaining) and STALE (13), but best out of the commonly played options was CLONE, which would have left just two solutions!

With just a yellow C to go with, I tried to work out which vowels might be included. POUCH seemed a decent option as P is also a common starting letter and C is regularly paired with H at the end of the word.

WordleBot liked this well enough and told me after the game that it had narrowed down my options to just five words: SCOLD, SCOFF, SCOOT, STOIC and SCOWL.

I’ll be honest: I didn’t bother trying to find them all today. I was in a rush and instead played the first word that fitted. SCOLD was that word and it scored me yet another 3/6.

So again, I got lucky. But on the other hand, there was some calculation there – L and D are very common letters overall, so even if I’d identified all five possible solutions I’d probably have played it over a word containing a W (SCOWL) or a double letter (SCOOT or SCOFF).

Either way, the Wordle gods smiled on me today. Hopefully they helped you out too.

Wordle yesterday (game #591) – hints

In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some hints for Wordle #591 too.

  • Wordle yesterday had one vowel*
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was C.
  • There was one repeated letter in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle is angry

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #591, was… CROSS.

This was about as average as Wordle can get. WordleBot says people solved it in 4 guesses and it’s a nice mix of common letters with a duplicate thrown in for good measure to make it slightly harder. I doubt there’ll have been many 2/6s here, but there shouldn’t have been too many lost streaks either.

The double-S is the biggest complication, because S isn’t that likely to be repeated in an answer, despite being very common overall. The main reason for that is that it most commonly occurs at the start of a word, where it’s regularly paired with T, H, L, N or P.

However, there are 49 answers in which S appears more than once, and in 36 of those you get two Ss together. They’re very common at the end of an answer: think AMISS, BLESS, CHESS, CLASS etc.

The good news is that you don’t get many Wordle answers that end with a single S, because the game doesn’t include plurals – so if you did find that S in the fifth slot early on, you’ll have had a good hint as to what the solution was here.

The other notable thing about game #591 is that it starts with the same two letters as game #590. The last time that happened was in September 2022, when games #467 and #468 were SCALD and SCORN respectively. Yes, I am a proper Wordle geek.

My own game started off well for that reason, because my current choice of Wordle start word is CRATE. That gave me the CR bit right away, but whereas on Sunday I only had 3 more answers to choose from, here I had 14. Quite a few other start words gave similar results, but CRONE was probably the best choice among the common options – that left just 6 choices.

I didn’t find all 14 of my possible solutions, but I came up with most of them and decided that rather than guess immediately and try to score a 2/6, I’d instead narrow down the options to guarantee a 3/6.

My choice of word was KILOS – which WordleBot said was “a solid guess, and a lucky one.” Thanks for the faint praise, WordleBot!

Lucky or not, it ruled out the likes of CRISP, CRIMP, CRUSH, CRUMB, CRONY, CROON, CROOK, CRICK and CROCK and left me with just one possible answer: CROSS. So that was a fourth 3/6 in a row for me as my streak approaches the 400 mark.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
